Why I Started The Brand Darkroom (And How It Works Alongside Turner Creative Co)

If you've spent any time on this site, you know Turner Creative Co is where I do web design, SEO, and branding for small businesses across Upstate South Carolina. What you might not know is that it's not the only business I run, and the other one exists for a very specific reason.

I also run The Brand Darkroom, a web design, copywriting, and SEO studio built exclusively for photographers. Two brands, two different audiences, one reason they both exist: I kept running into a version of the same problem, and it wasn't going to be solved by one website serving everyone.

It started with my own photography business

Before any of this, I was a working photographer. I still am. Erin Turner Photography has been my lifestyle newborn and family photography business here in the Greenville area for over 12 years, and for most of those years, I did what most photographers do: I leaned hard on Instagram to bring in bookings.

It worked, until it didn't. Instagram changes its algorithm on its own schedule, not yours. A platform you don't own can bury your content overnight for reasons nobody explains to you, and I watched that happen to my own reach more than once. I got tired of building a business on rented land.

So I turned my attention to my website and my SEO instead, the two things I actually own and control. I did the unglamorous work: fixing my site structure, writing better copy, building out content that answered the actual questions my ideal clients were searching. My own site went from buried on page four of Google for "Greenville newborn photographer" to page one, without posting a single new Instagram photo to make it happen.

That result is what started everything else.

Photographers kept asking me the same question

Once other photographers saw what happened with my own SEO, they started asking how I did it. At first I helped a few people informally. Then it became clear this wasn't a one-off curiosity, it was a real, recurring gap. Photographers are trained in light, composition, posing, and editing. Almost none of them are trained in SEO, website strategy, or conversion copywriting, and most of the web designers available to them don't understand the photography industry specifically enough to build for it well.

That gap is exactly what The Brand Darkroom exists to close. Every service there, from full website builds to SEO audits to The Full Exposure Framework (a 7-frame homepage methodology I built specifically for photographer websites), is designed around one type of client: photographers who are done depending on social media algorithms and ready to own their own visibility instead.

So why not just do all of it under one roof?

I get asked this more than almost anything else. The honest answer is that photographers and general small businesses have different enough problems that trying to serve both under one brand would have watered down the message for everyone.

A photographer's website needs to sell an experience and an aesthetic before it sells a service. A landscaping company's website needs to answer completely different trust questions and move visitors through a completely different decision process. The SEO strategy, the copy voice, even the site architecture look different depending on which of those two worlds a client is in.

Turner Creative Co exists for the second group: small businesses across Upstate SC (and beyond) who need a website, SEO, and branding built with the same strategy-first approach, just without the photography-specific specialization. The Brand Darkroom exists for the first group, built entirely around the photography industry, its trends, its client psychology, and what actually gets a photographer booked.

Same philosophy underneath both. Own your visibility instead of renting it. Build a website that's a business tool, not a digital brochure. Just two different audiences who each deserve a site built specifically for how their industry actually works.

What this means if you're reading this on the Turner Creative Co site

If you're a small business owner in Upstate SC and photography isn't your industry, you're already in the right place. Everything here is built for you specifically, from the website design process to the SEO strategy behind it.

But if you know a photographer who's still fighting for visibility through Instagram alone, or if photography is actually your business, The Brand Darkroom is where that specific expertise lives. It's worth a look, even just to see what a website built entirely around one industry's actual needs looks like.

Two businesses, one belief that got me here: you shouldn't have to depend on a platform you don't control to keep your business alive.
